BIO| GIADA RIPA 2016

Born in London and raised in Brussels, Giada Ripa graduated from Milan University with

an M.A. in political science. Based between New York and Milan, she started her career

in 2000 after studying at the International Center of Photography in NY working both as

an artist and a correspondent photographer for various local and international magazines.

Since then, Ripa has roamed the world, using its topographies as a backdrop for her

examinations of personal dislocation in both public and private spaces.

A great deal of both her artistic and documentary practices have focused on mainly

China, Central Asia, and the Caucasus. She concentrates on the analysis of space as a

means for exploring personal identity and has developed a body of work characterized by

introspection and experimentation. She often uses landscapes and energy production sites

as a backdrop for her performances during which she confronts herself with foreign and

distant places loaded with cultural, historical and geopolitical implications ( Falling Icons

and Displacement series).

She taught, between 2005 and 2011 on the MA program of Domus Academy in Milan

among several other workshops. Since 2006 a few publications; imagining ourselves:

voices of a new generation of women and presented at the UN in New York; in 2011 a

commissioned book by Eni, The invisible pipe-line exploring a hidden and eco -friendly

pipeline along the amazon rain forest in Ecuador. And in 2012 her last book

“Displacement” was published by Moleskine as their first photography book.

Ripa was shortlisted in the Terna 02 Award in 2009. The project; Beyond the Oil Route, a

personal journey beyond the former Silk Route now known as the Oil Route, has been

presented at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome, and at the Lucca Photo Fest.

Her first museum solo show was held in 2011 at MMOMA, the Moscow Museum of

Modern Art. Ripa was nominated for the leading Photography Award Prix Pictet in 2012

and was shortlisted in 2015 for the prestigious Vevey International Photo Award with her

latest project “The Yokohama Project 1867/2015” .

Her work The Yokohama Project 1867-2016 was exhibited in a group show “L’altro

sguardo; fotografe Italiane 1965-2015 last fall last in the Milan Triennale and was officially

launched in a solo show at Kyotographie in Japan last April and presented in Art

Brussels and Berlin Art weekend. Giada will be present with her latest series in Paris Photo  

and presented in Ruinart’s space  at the Grand Palais in Paris next November 2017.
